Inkwell - A truly great single vineyard wine

In this toil we can grant too much due to winemakers and not enough to grape growers. Anyone can buy grapes from a number of great sites, blend them together and make wonderful wine. But in this wine, the uniqueness of great vineyards is lost.

At Inkwell, we grow and sell our wine grapes to a small circle of winemakers we trust and we make wine from our grapes for our own single vineyard wines.

We make our own wine for two reasons. The first is that only by making age worthy wine from our own grapes can know our vineyard better. Most commercial wine is blended with wine made from other grower’s grapes before bottling. We can only understand our contribution by living with our wine as it evolves from birth to old age.

The second reason is that we like unique and special wines. There is no wine or grapes in the world exactly like Inkwells. Like fingerprints or snowflakes, faces or inkblots, Inkwell is utterly unique within a vintage and from vintage to vintage.

The fun is in connecting with people who enjoy sharing the single vineyard journey, those who write wondering how vintage is shaping up during the growing season, telling us where they drank some Inkwell and with what or who. In making sure Inkwell remains unique, it becomes part of their story too.

McLaren Vale Shiraz: Inkwell 2007

Philip White, Independent Weekly, 19 September 2009.

 Inkwell 2007 Shiraz: 93+++

 Grown meagerly, hand-pruned, and hand-picked in a hand weeded vineyard near the Gulf of St. Vincent, patron of vine dressers, then hand made in a coupla sheds, this is easily the best yet from Inkwell. Exuding a gentle mush of musky flesh and freshly-creamed leather, which rise from well of mysterious and seductive black fruits which have not yet evolved, on this planet anyway, it’s a finer, more lissome wine than most Vale tinctures, and needs dungeon time more than most. It’s intense, and tight, yet slender, highly appetizing, and frisky, not surly, with little hint of all that alcohol. Wait for it.

Inkwell Shiraz 2007

McLaren Vale, shiraz et al

By Campbell Mattinson

It’s grown using shiraz clones BVRC12, 1654, SAVI 13, 17, and 19. I have no idea what those clones are, but if you do, you are now informed. It’s matured in 100% French oak, 40% of that oak new. It’s “sustainably farmed”, “pruned and weeded by hand”, and made in one and two tonne open fermenters. I’ve had some correspondence from the Inkwell folks over the past few years, and it would be fair to judge that this is a vineyard that is lovingly and carefully tended. There’s nothing ‘industrial’ about this operation.

Big and warm but it has the structure to back it up. This is easily the best Inkwell shiraz released so far. It tastes of coffee grounds and violets, blackberries and earth. There are some chocolatey characters here too but they’re in the background. Polished cedary French oak stamps its class on it and it and then fruit punches all the way through the finish. Impeccable McLaren Vale shiraz, from a vintage that was by no means easy. If you love a big red - track this down.

James Halliday review on Rebel Rebel

Halliday threw us a bone! Here's what he said about Rebel Rebel McLaren Vale Shiraz 2006.

 "A deep, dark and inky bouquet, with fruitcake spice, black fruits and an abundance of sweet fruit; the palate is rich and quite chewy; beneath the ample fruit there is plenty of tannin and good fresh acidity. Very good value. Screwcap. 15% alc. Rating 94. To 2016. $25."

 He's also given it a 5 wine glass rating = Outstanding - wines of the highest quality, usually with a distinguished pedigree! Not sure there's any distinguished pedigree here, but a celebratory toast is in order!
